Pathways to Migrate to Australia

General Skilled Migration

Australia offers several migration pathways for skilled professionals, tradespeople, international graduates, families, employers and individuals with exceptional achievements. The most suitable pathway will depend on factors such as your occupation, qualifications, age, English-language ability, employment history, family circumstances and whether you have an eligible Australian employer, state or territory nomination.

Australia’s points-tested skilled migration programme is designed for suitably qualified professionals and tradespeople whose occupations meet the relevant requirements.

The principal pathways include:

Skilled Independent Visa

This permanent visa does not require sponsorship by an employer, family member, state or territory government. Applicants must generally submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect and receive an invitation to apply.

Skilled Nominated Visa

This is a permanent visa for skilled applicants nominated by an Australian state or territory government. Each jurisdiction establishes its own nomination requirements and occupational priorities.

Skilled Work Regional Visa

This provisional visa allows eligible skilled applicants nominated by a state or territory government, or sponsored by an eligible family member, to live and work in regional Australia.

A suitable skills assessment is normally required for points-tested skilled migration, and applicants must meet the relevant occupation, English-language, age, points and invitation requirements.

Australian migration requirements are complex and change regularly. The most appropriate pathway depends on your individual qualifications, occupation, work experience, English-language ability, points score, employer opportunities and family circumstances.

NDV Consulting coordinates access to Australian Registered Migration Agents and other appropriately authorised professionals who can:

  • Assess your eligibility

  • Identify suitable visa pathways

  • Explain the requirements, costs and risks

  • Develop an appropriate migration strategy

  • Prepare and manage your visa application

Employer Sponsored Migration

Qualified professionals and tradespeople may be able to migrate through an Australian employer willing to nominate them for an eligible position.

The main employer-sponsored pathways include:

Skills in Demand Visas

A temporary employer-sponsored visa for eligible workers nominated to fill positions with an approved Australian sponsoring business.

Employer Nomination Scheme Visas

A permanent residence pathway for eligible skilled workers nominated by an Australian employer.

Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visas

A provisional visa for skilled workers nominated by an eligible employer for a position located in designated regional Australia.

Eligibility depends on the nominated occupation, employer, qualifications, experience, English-language ability and the requirements of the relevant visa stream.

State and Regional Migration

Australian states and territories can nominate eligible skilled applicants for subclass 190 and subclass 491 visas. Nomination criteria vary between jurisdictions and may consider:

  • Your nominated occupation

  • Employment experience

  • English-language ability

  • Points score

  • Current residence

  • Employment offers

  • Links to the nominating jurisdiction

  • Commitment to living and working in the state or region

Regional pathways may offer opportunities for applicants whose occupations and professional backgrounds align with regional workforce requirements.

Please note Australian migration requirements are complex and change regularly. The most appropriate pathway depends on your individual qualifications, occupation, work experience, English-language ability, points score, employer opportunities and family circumstances.

Study-to-Career Pathway

International education can provide valuable qualifications, professional exposure and access to Australian career opportunities. However, studying in Australia does not automatically result in permanent residence.

Eligible international students may study in Australia under the Student visa—subclass 500. Certain graduates may later qualify for a Temporary Graduate visa—subclass 485, allowing them to live, work and study in Australia temporarily after completing eligible Australian studies.

A graduate may subsequently explore skilled, regional or employer-sponsored migration if they satisfy the applicable requirements.

Australian migration requirements are complex and change regularly. The most appropriate pathway depends on your individual qualifications, occupation, work experience, English-language ability, points score, employer opportunities and family circumstances.

Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens may be able to sponsor certain family members.

Potential pathways may include:

  • Partner and spouse visas

  • Prospective marriage visas

  • Child visas

  • Parent visas

  • Certain remaining-relative or carer pathways

Eligibility, costs and processing arrangements vary considerably between family visa categories.
